The Penguins’ prospects came from behind to beat the Toronto Maple Leaf prospects in overtime by a score of 6-5 during the first of four games in the four-team, round robin rookie tournament on Friday night in Kitchener, Ontario.
The Leafs took a commanding lead early on, posting four unanswered goals in the first 21 minutes of play. Mark Letestu finally got the Penguins’ on the board with a lone goal in the second period off from a feed from Tyler Kennedy. Early in the third period, the Penguins gave up another goal to the Leafs and slipped further behind with a score of 5-1.
The Penguins came to life, however, in the final 12 minutes of play off from 2 goals by Dustin Jeffrey, a goal by Kris Letang, and a goal by Alex Grant. Jeffrey’s second goal tied the game with just 31 second left in the game to force overtime. Tyler Kennedy scored the lone overtime goal in the shootout to give the Penguins the win. Ryan Stone picked up three assists on the goals by Jeffrey and Letang. Kris Letang also picked up an assist. Rookie netminder Dave Brown stopped 26 of 31 shots for the Penguins. Jonathan Filewich and Ryan Stone were the designated co-captains for the game.
